The Střížkov estate is mentioned already in a document from 1230. Praguers seized it in the Hussite period and owned it until 1547 when Emperor Ferdinand I Habsburg confiscated it and sold it to the owner of Libeň. The Old Town of Prague bought it as part of the Libeň dominion in 1662. In 1900, Střížkov was a village of 370 inhabitants and belonged to the Karlín district. In 1922, when it was incorporated into Prague and became part of Prague VIII, Střížkov had 365 inhabitants. In 1960, the inhabited part of Střížkov was incorporated into the Prague 8 district and the uninhabited part into Prague 9. In 1990, these parts of Střížkov became part of the City Districts of Prague 8 and Prague 9, respectively. The cadastral area of Střížkov is 2.03 sq km and the number of inhabitants is 14,179 (as of 16 October 2006).
Etymology: In 1227, the name of the area was “Ztrescov”. Originally “Střiežkov”, i.e. “Střiežek's Court”, from the personal name "Střiežek” (a domestic diminutive of “Střezimír” or “Střezivoj”).
